Week 28, Day 4
Objective: recognize distinctive and shared characteristics of cultures through reading; understand cultural background to literary texts, grade level vocabulary, and listening for understanding.

  1. Bell Work: Get out your Week 28 DRE and Rough Draft
  2. "My Ethics, My Codes of Life" Rough Draft
    1. Due by 4:00pm for a daily grade.  
    2. If you don't have it in class, you'll need to make time to come by later to show me.  
  3. Grade Week 28 DRE
  4. Expectations and quizzes for The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  
    1. Some reading will be done out loud, as a class.  Some reading will be done by yourself, in class.  But sometimes, you might have to read on your own, for homework. (Gasp!!!)
    2. You will be expected to take notes (handwritten) as you read.  
    3. You will be able to use these notes on your quizzes over the chapters. 
    4. The quizzes will be VERY detail-oriented.
    5. If you are absent, please catch up BEFORE you return to class.  I would encourage you to get with a classmate to know how much we read.  
    6. If you want to bring your own copy of the book, you may do so.  
    7. If you lose your school-issued book, it will cost you $15.00 to replace it.
    8. I HIGHLY encourage you to check out Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, or other web resources IN ADDITION TO reading the text.  It will help you with understanding.  It WILL NOT take the place of reading the actual book.  Do NOT rely solely on those resources.

      1. If you didn't get one assigned to you on Monday, I will assign you one today.
      2. Bring it to class EVERY, SINGLE DAY!

    Objective: recognize distinctive and shared characteristics of cultures through reading; understand cultural background to literary texts, grade level vocabulary, and listening for understanding.

    1. Bell Work: During the 1920s alcohol was illegal.  Write about ONE of these two topics.(Remember to use the correct number of words and to use at least two SAT words) 
      1. What would happen if alcohol was prohibited today?  
      2. Currently, marijuana is illegal (in most places.) What would be the result if it were to be legalized across the United States?

      2. This is not a LONG essay.  Don't complain!!!

        1. Rough Draft-TOMORROW at 4:00pm (but preferably in class)
        2. Revising and Editing-tentatively in class on Wednesday, April 8th
        3. Final Draft-Monday, April 13th at 4:00pm
    3. Begin brainstorming/pre-writing for your essay. Then, begin working on your "My Ethics, My Codes of Life" rough draft. 
      1. Use the document that was shared with you on Monday to help you figure out which ethics you would like to write about.  
      2. You should leave class today with SOMETHING.  Use your time wisely!
      3. Rough Draft is due tomorrow for a daily grade (No, you will NOT get class time to work on it.)

      1. Bell Work: Free Write
        1. 80 word minimum
        2. At least 2 SAT words
      2. Grade Week 27 DRE
      3. Continue working on The Great Gatsby Treasure Hunt
        1. This is an introduction to the novel we are about to begin.
        2. Do the assignment on your own paper.  This is an INDIVIDUAL assignment, not group or partner work.
        3. Follow the directions given for each section.  Answer thoroughly and in COMPLETE sentences, ON YOUR OWN PAPER.  Rephrase the answers in your own words...do NOT plagiarize.  
        4. Last year, there were a few problems with #7 and #8.  All of the links SHOULD be working.  If not, leave those blank and we will come back to them.    
      4. Reminders:
        1. SAT Quiz on Monday over Week 1-5 words.  Be prepared for sentences.

      1. Bell Work: The Great Gatsby takes place in the early 1920s.  What was going on  in America, historically, during this time?  (Remember to use 80 words and to use at least two SAT words)
      2. F. Scott Fitzgerald Author Information (p. 729)
        1. Read the author information.
        2. This may be done individually or as a class. 
        3. Put the important information in your document labeled "Author Information" 
        4. This information WILL be on the final exam.  
      3. Begin working on The Great Gatsby Treasure Hunt

        2. Add your username

        2. Log-in using the username/password I gave you.
        3. Change your password
        4. Accept the 'terms and conditions'
      6. Add the NEW password to your Username/Password document

        3. When done, "answer more questions"
