Objective: Washington Irving information; recognize distinctive and shared characteristics of cultures through reading; understand cultural background to literary texts, grade level vocabulary, and listening for understanding.
  1. Bell Work: Many writers write under a pen name, or a name other than their real name.  Samuel Clemens wrote under the name Mark Twain.  Washington Irving wrote under the name Jonathan Oldstyle.  Write reasons why you might use a pen name rather than your own pen name. Invent a pen name for yourself.

  1. Bell Work: Write a letter to Santa Claus. 
    1. I will give you the paper and an envelope.
    2. The letter needs to be grammatically correct, with at least 5 sentences.  
    3. The envelope needs to be addressed to:
      1. Santa Claus
      2. North Pole
    4. Put your name and address as the return address
    5. These will be given to the Godley PALs program to give to Macy's for their Believe Program.  See the flyer here.

    2. We are going to brainstorm some Events, People, Inventions, and Noteworthy Authors that are significant for this time period.

  1. Bell Work: Get a pencil out and get ready to continue your benchmark.  You may borrow one of my pencils, just please return.  
  2. Benchmark
    1. Today is the last day we will work on the benchmark in class.
    2. It must be completed by Thursday at 4:00pm.
    3. If you do not finish in the allotted time, it will be your responsibility to come in and finish.  
  3. When you are done, please work on something productive.

    3. If you do not finish in the allotted time, it will be your responsibility to come in and finish.
    4. Please take the benchmark seriously.  It will be a test grade and will determine mandatory tutorials after Christmas Break.
    5. Follow the directions carefully on the benchmark cover sheet.
